One of Europe's largest hotel and spas flourishes with a flagship low carbon heat project delivered by Reheat - significantly reducing carbon emissions and saving costs.

"Another milestone has been reached at Hoar Cross Hall, as we see the completion of our biomass facility, one of our key company initiatives is to work towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Biomass heat source has allowed us to take a huge step forward to achieving our goal. Being one of the largest Spa Hotels in Europe, it’s essential that we keep ahead of the curve when it comes to our energy consumption and impact on the environment, being in the heart of the National Forest, biomass was the obvious choice. We have been extremely proud to work with Reheat on this project and drive positive change to the business."
Phil Murphy, Managing Director at Hoar Cross Hall

Key project achievements

  • Highly reliable biomass system enabling significant annual carbon and cost savings to be achieved
  • Local woodchip supply chain implemented and managed by Reheat, boosting the local economy
  • Project a major reason behind award of global Sustainable Wellness Accreditation

Located in the Staffordshire countryside, the award-winning Hoar Cross Hall Hotel and Spa is delivering on its decarbonisation goals with a forward thinking, low carbon heat project.

Premium resort operator Barons Eden partnered with Reheat to deliver an industry leading 1MW sustainable biomass heating project at the award-winning Hoar Cross Hall Hotel and Spa in Staffordshire. This initiative has become a cornerstone of the resort’s ambitious decarbonisation strategy, significantly reducing its carbon footprint and supporting its journey toward Net Zero.

The core of the project involved Reheat designing and installing two state-of-the-art 500kW biomass boilers which now provide year-round heat for this 104-bed hotel and its extensive spa complex.

Carbon and cost savings meet local economic benefit

The project removed the hotel’s previous oil-based heating system, and has replaced 350,000 litres of oil on site. In addition to the technical delivery, Reheat provided expert consultancy on wood fuel options, ensuring the system would be both efficient and environmentally responsible.

This approach became a long-term biomass heat supply agreement with Hoar Cross Hall. The biomass fuel - sustainable wood chip - is sourced from within and around the National Forest, with most deliveries coming from less than 15 miles away. This not only reduces transport emissions but also strengthens the local rural economy.

The project’s impact has been transformative, with the system saving hundreds of tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually, reducing Hoar Cross Hall’s overall emissions by 60% and supporting Barons Eden’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Not only this, Barons Eden are also realising significant reductions in energy costs compared with fossil fuel alternatives.

Award winning sustainability

As a result, Hoar Cross Hall has been awarded the prestigious Gold Grade for Sustainability by Sustainable Wellness - a global accreditation that assesses and recognises spas and wellness centres for their sustainability practices. The resort was also named Best Spa for Sustainability at the Good Spa Guide Awards in 2024.

This project exemplifies how innovative renewable energy solutions can align with luxury hospitality, heritage preservation, and environmental stewardship, all while delivering long-term, local economic and ecological benefits.
