Premium hotel and spa flourishes with a flagship decarbonisation project delivered by Reheat, reducing heat emissions by 95%.
"Another milestone has been reached at Hoar Cross Hall, as we see the completion of our biomass facility, one of our key company initiatives is to work towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Biomass heat source has allowed us to take a huge step forward to achieving our goal. Being one of the largest Spa Hotels in Europe, it’s essential that we keep ahead of the curve when it comes to our energy consumption and impact on the environment, being in the heart of the National Forest, biomass was the obvious choice. We have been extremely proud to work with Reheat on this project and drive positive change to the business."
Phil Murphy, Managing Director at Hoar Cross Hall
Key project achievements
- Flagship renewable heating system has will save Hoar Cross Hall 1,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually
- The project has reduced the hotel and spa's overall emissions by 40%
- With Reheat's forestry expertise and advice, the biomass is locally sourced from surrounding trees and woodland
- Reheat also manages the heat supply to the hotel, meaning sustainable biomass is provided without interrupting the hotel's operations
- The project aligns with Baron Eden Hotel Group's ambition to decarbonise and supports the local rural economy

Reheat completed a project to decarbonise Barons Eden Hotel Group's Hoar Cross Hall Hotel and Spa with a renewable heating system set to save over 1,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent each year.
Located in the Staffordshire countryside, the award-winning resort invested in a 1MW biomass heating system that sources its wood fuel locally, in a boost to the county’s rural economy. A major part of the project was Reheat replacing an oil-based heat system, instead using woodchip from the management of surrounding trees and woodlands.
Reheat determined that the year-round heat demand could be met by locally sourced biomass, designing and installing a system comprising two state-of-the-art 500kW biomass boilers. In executing the project, the team faced the twin challenges of keeping the 100-bed hotel and spa open while replacing the existing oil heating systems, and at the same time ensuring there was no disturbance to the historically important buildings, with the Hall’s origins dating back over 600 years.
Reheat also advised on wood fuel options and have established a long-term heat supply contract to source woodchip from in and around the National Forest, most of which will come from less than 15 miles from the hotel, enabling Hoar Cross Hall to realise its ambition to further support the local rural economy. This is especially apt as the village of Hoar Cross was originally developed on the site of Needwood Forest in the 11th Century.
The use of sustainable woodchip also promotes positive woodland management by utilising low-grade timber that would otherwise have gone to waste. Stimulating woodland management improves biodiversity and climate change mitigation, as well as sending a clear ‘plant trees’ signal to landowners. As a result, Hoar Cross Hall is now providing its guests with year-round reliable and sustainable heat as part of a premium hotel and spa experience.
