re:heat have been delivering successful biomass boiler projects for the National Trust since 2015. Starting small with a 100kW installation at Nunnington Hall in North Yorkshire, we’ve now completed 7 projects with a combined capacity of over 1,500kW across the midlands and north of England. Realising that biomass boilers are the ideal technology choice to decarbonise the heating at many of their sites, they form a key plank in delivering the National Trust’s commitment to meet half of their energy needs with renewables by 2021, and be net zero as an organisation by 2030.
re:heat have acted as principal designer and main contractor for seven new installation projects for the National Trust, and have carried out extensive diagnostic and system renewal works at two further historic properties where the original biomass installations were falling short of expectations.
As you might expect of Europe’s largest conservation charity, responsible for over 500 historic houses and castles, the National Trust are a demanding client, and every project presents is own unique set of challenges. Some of these are common to every project, such as the need to plan and carry out works in a way which are sensitive to the built heritage, and the need for the Trust to keep the properties open year-round; while some are unique and often unexpected.
We’ve found solutions to technical problems, such as crossing a moat with district heating mains as part of the 440kW pellet boiler installation at Dunham Massey in Cheshire; weather related ones – dealing with the arrival of the ‘Beast from the East’ while fitting a system to High Peak at Ravenscar, an extremely exposed property overlooking Robin Hood’s Bay; and the downright surreal – chasing peacocks from the district heating main trenches at Nunnington Hall every morning when we started work.
