Boston Borough Council: Installation of two 500kW woodchip boilers

re:heat was brought in by Boston Borough Council to provide advice and support on their investment in biomass heating systems at two leisure centres.  Over an 18 month period we provided a range of services including system design, tender preparation and the installation of two 500kW woodchip boilers and bespoke fuel-loading systems.

Following two tender exercises, re:heat eventually coordinated the installation of two 500kW Fröling Turbomat woodchip boilers and bespoke fuel-loading systems at the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex and Princess Royal Sports Arena.  Our role involved coordinating mechanical and electrical subcontractors, alongside the supply, assembly and commissioning of the commercial-weight biomass boiler systems.

Particular challenges on the two sites were presented by the very high water table in Boston.  The town sits just inland from The Wash, at the confluence of several natural and man-made water courses.  At just 2 meters above sea level, large subterranean fuel stores were simply not an option.  Each boiler installation features an elevating chip loader, also manufactured by Fröling in Austria, feeding into a large above ground woodchip store.  These innovative systems enable the sites to receive tipped deliveries of woodchip, ensuring low fuel costs and flexibility in the choice of supplier.
